The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our team as a Natural Resources Technician 2 (NRT2) at the Clear Lake Wildlife Management Unit. The NRT2 will play a vital role in project administration, habitat management, facility development, and maintenance, ensuring compliance with department policies and regulations while contributing to the conservation and enhancement of natural resources.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Project Administration:
• Prepare and submit various reports on a daily, quarterly, and annual basis, ensuring compliance with department policies and procedures.
• Assist in the preparation of project requests, purchasing supplies, submitting claims for payment, and maintaining records.
• Provide daily oversight, leadership, and direction to NRT1's, temporary employees, and volunteers to complete development and maintenance projects.
2. Habitat Management:
• Collaborate with the WMU Biologist to plan habitat development projects on public areas, including vegetation management, facility development, and wetland enhancement.
• Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards set by the DNR and OSHA.
• Assist in the control of noxious weeds and coordinate efforts with County Weed Commissioners.
3. Facility Development and Maintenance:
• Oversee the condition and maintenance of all WMU facilities, including buildings, signs, roads, bridges, and water control structures.
• Investigate complaints and recommendations for needed repairs, purchase necessary materials, and supervise employees or contractors to ensure completion.
4. Equipment Maintenance:
• Maintain, inspect, and repair all WMU equipment, providing guidance to staff on proper maintenance procedures.
• Manage inventory and storage of tools and equipment to ensure efficient repairs.
5. Population Management:
• Oversee trapping and banding activities for various animal species as part of population monitoring efforts.
• Conduct surveys of game and non-game species and their habitats to support wildlife management objectives.
6. Informational and Educational Programs:
• Serve as a local contact for public inquiries, providing information on DNR rules and regulations.
• Conduct presentations for schools, service clubs, and sportsmen groups, and engage with media as needed.
• Provide information to other WMUs and DNR bureaus on WMU projects and attend professional meetings and training sessions.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Natural Resources Management, Environmental Science, or related field preferred.
• Previous experience in project administration, habitat management, and facility maintenance.
• Knowledge of DNR policies, safety regulations, and work procedures.
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
• Must be able to operate heavy equipment and handle weapons safely and responsibly.
• Willingness to obtain necessary certifications and training for job duties.
Essential Functions
Function within a small field work team to accomplish needed land management activities.
• Perform strenuous work and work under inclement conditions at times.
• Knowledge of wildlife management techniques and the ability to perform techniques used to conduct basic wildlife management projects.
• Work outside under any type of weather conditions and to withstand physically demanding work.
• Knowledge of basic state and federal laws, rules, and regulations as they relate to wildlife resources.
• Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
• Must display a high standard of ethical conduct.
Applicants must meet requirements of DAS Selective Certification #901 - Wildlife Biology, which requires a minimum of 12 semester hours, six months experience, or a combination of both in the area of wildlife biology.
The successful candidates must be able to obtain the following:
1. Pesticide License
2. CPR/First Aide certification
3. Chain Saw Safety Certification
4. Firefighter Training Certification
5. Possess and maintain valid driver’s license
6. CDL
Normal hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, however the hours and shifts may vary during the DNR peak seasons.

The starting salary for new state (Executive Branch) employees is expected to be at the base of the pay range. Additional salary increases may occur after the first six months, and then annually (if applicable).
