      The Opportunity
      The City of Tumwater is seeking a creative, organized, and community-focused Art Coordinator to lead and grow the Tumwater Arts Program. This is a unique opportunity to shape how art is experienced throughout the community, bringing creative vision to public spaces, programs, and partnerships that inspire connection and pride.

      In this role, you will play a key part in implementing the City’s Arts Plan by coordinating public art projects and developing engaging arts programs, classes, and events. You’ll collaborate closely with City staff, local artists, community groups, and regional partners to ensure the arts remain a vibrant and accessible part of Tumwater’s identity.

      • Leads with the organization and implementation of art programs, classes, and events.
      • Uses adopted Art Strategy as a resource to create and implement the Tumwater Arts Plan.
      • Manages time, meets deadlines, and prioritizes responsibilities to perform multiple and overlapping projects and duties.
      • Assists with hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating temporary staff and volunteers; provides or coordinates staff and volunteer training.
      • Oversees the development and implementation of public art projects and initiatives.
      • Develops strategic plans, timelines, and budgets for new public art projects.
      • Plans for inventory, maintenance, and upkeep of past and future public art projects.
      • Builds relationships with arts professionals, arts communities, private companies, community representatives, interested parties, other cities, and governmental agencies, through meetings, public forums, panels, and other creative activities.
      • Serves as staff liaison to a variety of boards, commissions, and committees and prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence related to the Arts Program.
      • Speaks publicly to community groups, classes, and other art-focused and interest groups regarding opportunities related to the Tumwater Arts Program.
      • Performs other tasks and duties assigned by the Recreation Manager.

      Knowledge: Knowledge of public and cultural arts programming and its application; arts management, safety and emergency first-aid procedures; planning and organization of programming and budget evaluation.

      Abilities:

      • Work independently and as part of a team.
      • Develop and implement public art programs, involving the design and integration of artwork into the construction or improvement of public sites and buildings.
      • Develop a range of programs including architecture, historic and cultural, indigenous, visual, performing, folk, and literary arts.
      • Coordinate the design, fabrication, and installation of public art.
      • Utilize exceptional organizational skills, multi-tasking, and prioritization to meet critical deadlines.
      • Communicate clearly and effectively orally, in writing, and using technology.
      • Prepare, monitor, and administer program and event budgets, grants, and contracts.
      • Prepare and present grant applications and administer grants, grant-funded projects, and grant-funded programs.
      • Prepare and manage all aspects of assigned program budget, participating with the division management team in the development of the annual division budget, strategic initiatives, and work plan.
      • Collect, organize, analyze, and report performance measurement data, information, and program results.
      • Punctual, regular, and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance.

      Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in an Arts, Fine Arts, Art History, Arts Administration program or closely related field. At least one (1) year of experience coordinating community arts program or similar activity.

      • Ability to achieve cooperation and effectiveness among community partners and the public; meeting the needs of competing groups, interests, and populations.
      • Knowledge of methods and techniques used to evaluate service, policy, and program effectiveness.
      • Knowledge of program development including complex programs and projects requiring team development and interdisciplinary coordination.
      • Ability to successfully manage projects within budget and timeframes allotted.
      • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, other agencies, organizations, and the general public.

      Preferred Qualifications: Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be evaluated for comparability and applicability. Supervisory experience is highly preferred. Knowledge and experience with Native Pacific Northwest (PNW) art. Experience working with PNW tribal entities.

      Special Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid Washington state driver's license. Must be able to work varying schedules to include evening and weekend assignments. First Aid Certificate, CPR and AED Certificate required within six months of hire.

      • Responsible for all activities and tasks related to planning, delivery, and evaluation of programs and events presented by the Tumwater Arts Program.
      • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates contract artists and vendors, volunteers, and seasonal staff.
      • Develops, manages, and meets all program and events expenditure and revenue goals.
      • Works closely with Recreation Marketing Specialist to appropriately plan and publicize programs and events.
      • Works with other staff to coordinate support, as needed, for all major special events, including set-up, tear-down, vendor services, and staff meetings for collaborative planning and implementation.

      Working Conditions: Outside work may be required in all types of weather. Work requires occasional long periods of standing or walking. Frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds. Work during evenings and weekends is required. This position is eligible for a limited amount of remote work subject to supervisor approval. Remote work for this position is subject to department’s operational needs and will be discussed with candidates during the selection process. Full-time remote work is not an option. Once hired, employees must reside in the State of Washington. Work is often performed in an office setting. Specific physical requirements and typical working conditions for this position are on file in the Administrative Services Department.


      Supervision: Under the supervision of the Recreation Manager, this position is responsible for providing a variety of programs, classes, and events that facilitate community arts, enrichment, and cultural experiences.
