  The nation’s satellites perform important civil, scientific, and national defense functions such as navigation, communication, weather forecasting, astronomical observations, and surveillance. As space becomes increasingly congested and contested, maintaining awareness of all man-made objects around the Earth is critical for ensuring the safe and effective operation of U.S. satellites. Our researchers are collecting data from a global network of ground-based and space-based sensors to help both military and civil organizations track objects in space, monitor potential threats, and protect critical national assets. We leverage advanced data processing capabilities that rapidly ingest observations from the Space Surveillance Network (SSN) and integrate that data to generate an accurate picture of the space environment around the Earth and to make predictions about evolving activity in space. We work closely with organizations such as the United States Space Force (USSF) in order to maintain awareness in the space domain and to respond to rapidly changing events in space.

  Job Description

  The Information Integration and Decision Support Group is seeking a data scientist or analyst to support the US in its effort to maintain situational awareness of Earth-orbiting man-made objects.

  Responsibilities include developing assessment techniques, algorithms, and visualizations of space surveillance data of man-made object in order to improve the ability to detect, track, and characterize them.

  The candidate should have experience with data analysis and the desire to learn about a wide array of technologies related to sensors, satellites, communication systems, navigation, and data exploitation. The desired background of a candidates must include one of aerospace and/or electrical engineering; applied math or data science with a strong physics or engineering component; or physics and/or astronomy. Assignments will require the candidate to work independently and in a team environment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role. We are seeking highly motivated, exceptionally bright and creative individuals who can think broadly, analyze complex problems, implement solutions in a rapid prototyping environment, and who wish to contribute to the development of cutting-edge technology in support of National Security.

  Required Skills

  • Master’s degree in Physics, Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, or related field, or Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years’ experience.
  • Experience with data analysis or modeling and simulation.
  • Familiarity with software tools such Python, Java, or MATLAB. Familiarity with Linux operating systems is preferred. Familiarity with database tools is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government (DoD) security clearance.
  • Candidates with a current TS/SCI clearance are desired.
