Job summary
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England, serving the populations of Birmingham and Solihull. The Trust is composed of four main hospital sites; Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEHB), Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital (HGS). The post-holder will be expected to be based at Heartlands Hospital unless service provision is required across site. The department will be looking into taking on a static automation MLA and a rotational chemistry MLA.
The department provides a 24/7 diagnostic and monitoring service for routine and urgent automated investigations. The Clinical Chemistry department is equipped with Abbott Alinity c and i series analysers and the Abbott a3600 track.
Specialist Chemistry provides a wide range of services to the Trust as well as other Hospital Trusts. Equipment includes IDS iSYS, Shimadzu HPLC and Sciex Tandem Mass Spectrometry analysers, with several tests measured including immunosuppressant's and steroids. There are manual methods using radio-immunoassay for alpha-subunits and ELISA for faecal Elastase.
We also offer a full immunology service covering all aspects from autoimmunity to specialised cell work.
This is a fantastic opportunity to become an MLA fully competent in all areas of Biochemistry including automated chemistry.
This is a full time permanent post (37.5 hrs per week)
Main duties of the job
We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our busy, friendly team and support our progressive department in providing high quality, timely and specialised services. We are UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards, MHRA approved and IBMS accredited for training.
This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience of working in a fast-paced department that is continually growing, and to expand and develop your existing knowledge and skills. This includes running of the Abbott a3600 track, manual processing of Alinity i-STAT samples and osmolarity analysis using the Osmo1. In Specialist testing MLA's will perform sample preparation including 24 hour urines for analysis and prepare samples for testing at other laboratories in the area.
The laboratory operates a 24/7 service and, after appropriate training, you will be expected to support the departmental shift system as required - including weekends. Shifts include Early (7:30-3:30pm), Day (9:00-5:00pm), Late (2:00-10:00pm) and Nights (9:45pm-7:45am).
