Position Summary
To provide 24/7 leadership and direction to facilitate the delivery of professional, safe, high quality patient care. Facilitate multi-disciplinary healthcare teams. Develop and maintain finances approved for department. Comply with and enforce all departmental policies and procedures, and standards of patient care delivery. This position is also responsible for the coordination of surgical activities to enhance patient placement and flow across the Charlton campus. The 4 Chest patient population includes thoracic surgery, head and neck surgery, otolaryngology, and plastic surgery. Surgical Step Down provides Level II critical care for all surgical case types.
Qualifications
-Bachelor's Degree
-3 to 5 years’ experience
-Minimum 3 years clinical management experience; will consider front line leadership experience such as Charge Nurse or Advanced Practice Nurse, including demonstrated knowledge in relevant area
-Member in good standing of the College of Nurses, RNAO and/or membership certificate in area of expertise (Specialty Certificate)
-Maintains membership in professional organizations as related to area of expertise and knowledgeResponsibilities
-Maintains confidentiality at all times and ensures the release of information is in accordance with hospital policy
-Maintains and fosters an environment that is sensitive to the diversity of internal and external communities
-Monitors, evaluates and conducts regular performance appraisals of direct reports, provides ongoing coaching and feedback in a positive and supportive manner. Manages the recruitment and selection of all department staff within the approved budget guidelines
-Develops and implements appropriate orientation programs for new staff
-Evaluates staff educational needs on an ongoing basis
-Fosters effective employee and labour relations through knowledgeable interpretation and implementation of hospital policies and collective agreements
-Completes and authorizes appropriate Payroll and Human Resources documentation within timelines
-Assumes the role of Administrator on-call for assigned periods throughout the year
-Provides supervision to staff in a variety of union and non-union roles (ONA, CUPE)
-Directs nursing practice and processes to ensure excellence in patient care delivery in accordance with MOHLTC, CCHSA Accreditation and LHIN #4
-Ensures excellence in patient care and service delivery through continuous quality improvement processes that include planning, quality monitoring and risk avoidance
-Responsible for the management, operation and organizational effectiveness of the department, including managing all aspects of human and financial resources together with developing, implementing and managing short and long-term strategic priorities and quality improvement initiatives
-Acts as a coach, mentor and role model to team members and provides leadership to all staff by providing and an environment where shared governance, empowerment and respect for diversity can grow
-Responsible for the coordination of capital and non-capital equipment purchases for the department
-Responsible for risk management; to review, follow through and report on complaints
-Responsible for incident reports; to review, follow through on incident reports in a designated time frame
-Participates in the development of the operating plan in consultation with stakeholders such as support services and departments, physicians, staff, consumers and community partners
-Works with Human Resources, Union Leaders, Finance Department, and all other professional practice leaders
