      The City of Virginia Beach Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation's Code Enforcement division is seeking a Code Enforcement Inspector to conduct inspections of the city's existing structures and properties to address code violations through enforcement of the Virginia Maintenance Code and the city's property maintenance codes. Code inspectors investigate complaints and patrol their assigned area for building and property maintenance code violations. They notify property owners of violations and take appropriate legal action to obtain compliance.

      Duties include:

      • Enforce building maintenance and property maintenance codes, and other regulations orordinances, in assigned areas of the city for the Code Enforcement Division of Virginia Beach Housing and Neighborhood Preservation.
      • Perform daily inspections in the field.
      • Issue notices of violations.
      • Explain regulations to the public.
      • Issue summonses.
      • Testify in court.
      • Access dwellings, commercial buildings, and undeveloped properties that may be difficult toaccess.
      • Perform in accordance with the organization's values and core strategies.
      • Drive a city vehicle.

      State certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector must be obtained within 18 monthsfrom the date of employment in accordance with the Virginia Certification Standards.

      This position may be filled as either a Code Inspector I or Code Inspector II based on the selected applicant's qualifications. State certification as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector and attendance at the required state training modules are required to start at the Code Inspector II level position. The associated pay grades and starting salaries are as follows:

      Applicants for this position will be considered for future vacancies for up to six months.
