- Professionally operate a tandem front-load bin truck in all weather conditions, including maneuvering through confined areas such as back lanes and congested parking lots
- Professionally operate a rear-load tandem collection vehicle to collect varying sizes of cart containers
- Ensuring security at all relevant sites that are serviced
- Professionally and efficiently navigate narrow streets, use mirrors and cameras as well employing a guide when available for backing. While operating complex hydraulic systems
- Perform and document pre-trip and post-trip inspections, follow regularly scheduled maintenance, and report defects on collection vehicles
- Maintain daily truck sheets documenting load start and finish times, unit start and finish mileage, and documenting daily time management
- Report bin defects, service difficulties, or any issues encountered to the appropriate personnel
- Select the most efficient routes for travel to and from assigned work areas and disposal locations
- Be aware of collection processes and policies to aid in any public inquiries you may encounter in the field, dealing with concerns from the public of a minor nature
- Maintain a positive customer service-driven attitude while performing the daily collection duties
- Adhere to all standard operating procedures and OH&S guidelines for safe work practices during the collection process, including all environmental standards and regulations
- Maintain a clean and sanitary collection vehicle, including daily cleaning of the compaction area
- Assist the labourer with waste/recycle/food scraps container movement to and from the collection vehicle
- Perform other and related duties as directed by leadership
Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by truck driving experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Ability to operate electronic devices such as Tablets and Cell phones
Experience in the Waste Industry
Experience operating tandem front-load and rear-load collection vehicles
Completion of a Defensive Driving Course
Current Standard First Aid certification
Knowledge of Edmonton’s road network, including truck routes
Ability to work in a team environment
Good interpersonal skills in order to work well with other City employees, like inspectors and coworkers, as well as the public
Knowledge of appropriate material handling practices to avoid skin and eye contamination, cuts, slipping, and associated mishaps
Ability to maneuver bin, cart-handling controls to minimize damage to bins/carts and avoid adjacent hazards at collection sites
Physically capable of sustained heavy manual labour, including loading recycling, refuse, containers and maneuvering bins/carts on site

Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's license with airbrake (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position; there may be a cost associated with this requirement
Passing a physical strength evaluation (Functional Ability Recruitment Evaluation test - F.A.R.E.) and a pre-employment City medical examination is a requirement of this position
Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement for this position
Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
Physically capable of driving for prolonged periods (up to 8 hours per day) while working in adverse weather and road conditions
Assisting in maneuvering Bins/carts to the collection vehicle in all weather conditions
Cleaning the collection vehicle, and daily cleaning of the hopper location

The Communal Collection Operator position requires operation of a tandem front load bin truck and rear load collection vehicle (GVW up to 24,000 kg) to collect waste and recycling from large bins/carts of varying sizes. You will provide waste collection service to a variety of sites, primarily for communal dwellings and City owned facilities.

Up to 5 Temporary Full-time positions for up to 10 months
Successful applicants may be eligible for recall in the 2027 season
Hours of Work: Various shifts, 40 hours per week. Overtime work may be required during peak operational periods
Salary: $38.268 (Hourly)
