- Researches, analyzes, and interprets criminal activity reports, crime statistics, criminal offender profiles, and other data involving crime analysis. Responds to investigative requests for analytical examination of data.
- Collects, organizes, and prepares various statistical and narrative reports and charts for the purpose of identifying or summarizing crime patterns or trends in criminal activity. Performs criminal intelligence analysis of major crimes.
- Provides appropriate information and special bulletins of criminal activities to the general public, other law enforcement personnel and agencies, public officials, and the visual and print media. Designs and prepares analytical reports and crime maps for use in department meetings.
- Assists other Town Departments with statical data and other information when requested.
- Reviews manpower allocations, patrol plans, and crime prevention activities to assess effectiveness of actions designed to combat identified criminal problems; drafts summary reports of analysis and recommends changes in patrol or investigative procedures, deployment strategies, staffing levels, or related law enforcement activities.
- Reviews with police records and supervisory personnel the design and amendment of computerized records management activities; resolves questions regarding the data entry and report preparation of computerized criminal history information.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the public, other law enforcement agencies, public officials, and news media.
- Attends various meetings, seminars, and training sessions to remain abreast of current practices and techniques utilized in crime analysis and reporting.
- Performs special projects and studies as directed by the Chief of Police or supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Performs difficult administrative work completing statistical and geographic analysis of crimes for the Police Department; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. The work requires considerable initiative, independent judgment, and discretion. The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project.
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration or related field with 1-2 years of experience working with crime and statistical analysis and GIS applications. Or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position. Completion of crime analysis and GIS course is preferred.
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina.This position’s physical requirements involve sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: sitting, manual dexterity, handling, feeling, speaking, hearing, repetitive motions, mental acuity and/or visual acuity.
The work has no exposure to environmental conditions. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office with computer printers, light traffic).
