POSITION: Director of Fine Arts EXEMPT STATUS: Exempt NUMBER OF DAYS: According to district approved calendar DEPARTMENT: Teaching and Learning REPORTS TO: Executive Director, Teaching and Learning SUPERVISES: As assigned EDUCATION: Valid Texas teaching certificate Master’s Degree (Performing Arts area preferred), required EXPERIENCE: Five years of successful elementary and/or secondary teaching experience in a field related to Fine Arts Position Function/Purpose To articulate the vision for and provide leadership to the District’s Performing and Visual Arts programs by guiding, directing, and monitoring access and delivery of instructional services to students. Provide leadership of functions related to Performing Arts (band, choir, orchestra, theatre arts, and dance) and Visual Arts programs. Successfully navigate the interrelatedness of students, stakeholders, personnel, administration, budget, curriculum, facilities, and public relations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Instructional Management 1. Provide oversight of and direction to the district’s Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Enrichment Programs. 2. Assist teachers and principals with the implementation and improvement of fine arts instruction. Activities will consist of design and distribution of instructional materials, assistance with planning for instruction, and evaluation of fine arts instructional programs, writing, revision, review, and implementation of fine arts assessments. 3. Coordinate the review and selection of fine arts textbooks and curricular materials. 4. Plan and/or coordinate additional fine arts student activities such as special concerts, festivals, field trips, competitions/exhibits at both campus and district levels. School/Organization Climate 5. Brief the superintendent, the school board, and the public concerning fine arts programs and their implementation, upon request. 6. Prepare and present fine arts program reviews to the board and staff, as needed. 7. Plan and conduct regular meetings for curriculum review, revision and instructional improvement with appropriate fine arts teachers and staff groups. 8. Present and interpret to the board, principals and teachers any changes in fine arts instructional programs- goals, contents, methods, procedures, and materials. 9. Promote open and positive communication among central office staff, campus administration, campus teachers, the Board of Trustees, and stakeholders. School/Organization Improvement 10. Assist with or initiate the design or revision of fine arts instructional programs to further district instructional goals. 11. Exercise leadership in the development and revision of district level fine arts curriculum guides and other public documents, and ensure that they are current. 12. Design, coordinate, and present professional learning opportunities for fine arts teachers and staff, including new teacher orientation. 13. Collaborate with colleagues to encourage the integration of disciplines, whenever possible. Personnel Management 14. Provide leadership in ongoing provision of information and training for teachers about the appraisal process as it relates to the district fine arts program. 15. Stay current in appraiser certification and training, as required by Midland ISD. 16. Provide professional learning and assistance for teacher improvement in collaboration and cooperation with other support staff and principals, as needed, to maximize teacher performance and success. 17. Assist in the recruitment and selection interview process for fine arts teachers, as requested by campus or district leaders. Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management 18. Prepare and submit fine arts program budget recommendations and exercise responsible management of the budget. 19. Provide information about fine arts instructional needs for use by campus and district administrators in the preparation of campus budgets. 20. Comply with state, district, and campus policies and with operating and budgetary procedures and requirements. Facilities Management 21. Confer with directors and principals in planning for facility utilization and/or expansion for fine arts programs. 22. Secure appropriate meeting sites for all professional learning activities, communicating in a timely and efficient manner with the primary site managers concerning specific needs. 23. Assist public groups in securing facilities for presentations to student and teacher groups. 24. Act as a liaison between building principals, MISD repair services, purchasing, and manufacturers in maintaining fine arts equipment required for the instructional program. Student Management 25. Plan carefully for all district-wide fine arts programs and student activities sponsored by the school district. 26. Facilitate all-level student participation in local, regional, and national fine arts competitions. School/Community Relations 27. Plan for broad-based teacher and community involvement in curriculum development projects. 28. Work actively with community organizations to promote the arts and to encourage cultural growth in the community (specifically act as district liaison with the Midland/Odessa Symphony Board, The Midland Arts Assembly, Midland Opera Theatre Board, City Council PTA, Midland Community Theatre, the Museum of the Southwest, Midland Festival Ballet, and other art related associations). Professional Growth and Development 29. Plan for and engage in professional learning opportunities which update knowledge of content, programs, methods and materials, and federal and state guidelines affecting fine arts instruction. 30. Promote and assist fine arts teachers’ participation in personal and professional growth opportunities. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for the supervision and management of the fine arts program and materials. Qualification Requirements Minimum Education/Certification: • Valid Texas teaching certificate • Master’s Degree (Performing Arts area preferred) Special Knowledge/Skills: • Experience delivering professional learning to staff • Advanced training in specific fine arts subject(s) • Ability to work well with a diverse population Minimum Experience: • Five years of successful elementary and/or secondary classroom fine arts teaching experience • Demonstrated leadership of other teachers WORK ENVIRONMENT Emotional– Maintain emotional control under stress Physical– Moderate carrying and lifting.
