      This position is located in a Forest Service unit. The purpose of the position is to serve as a resource crew member in support of the unit's program in any of the following resource areas: timber, recreation, or range.

      Duties


      • Performs the full range of standardized forestry support duties for assigned resource area(s) such as timber, recreation, range, or research activities.
      • Assists in one or more of the following duties:
      • Cruising timber by following specific instructions on taking and recording simple measurements and running compass lines in the field using compass and chain;
      • Noting compliance with rules and regulations on parking, campfire, sanitation, use of picnic sites, or hunting and fishing; maintaining and cleaning up recreation/wilderness areas;
      • Performing various standard duties related to silviculture activities.
      • Uses tools such as crosscut saws, adze, axes, and hand tools to maintain wilderness areas, facilities, and trails.
      • Performs trail maintenance to meet established trail standards.
      • Improves the quality of wilderness areas by reducing erosion at campsites and restoring the area's natural vegetation.
      • Clears and dismantles abandoned camps, packs out garbage and occasionally helps develop and present Leave No Trace camping programs.
      • Takes and/or records basic measurements such as compass readings, distance measurements, tree heights, tree diameters, tree growth, and determines common species.
      • Receives training on marking trees for cutting using tools such as Spiegel Relaskop, clinometer, compass, chain, diameter tape, increment borer, electronic field data recorder, etc.
      • Performs data collection from a checklist for use in inventorying and monitoring resources.

      Requirements


      • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
      • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
      • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
