  Summary:

  Are you detail-oriented, passionate about animal welfare, and energized by a fast-paced, dynamic and complex environment? If so, the position of Kennel Attendant (KA) at the ASPCA may be for you. As an integral member of the LA Feline Programs team, the Kennel Attendant supports a program that provides care for approximately 1,500 kittens and cats annually.

  Who We Are

  In collaboration with the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care & Control, the ASPCA LA Feline Programs provides temporary care and adoption opportunities for at-risk feline populations that might not find positive outcomes in a shelter environment. These populations include:

  • Orphaned neonates under 4 weeks old

  • Underage, orphaned kittens aged 4-8 weeks (our primary population)

  • Queens in need of a stress-free environment to raise their young

  • Juvenile and adult cats needing extra support finding adoption opportunities while recovering from illness or after extended stays in a shelter environment

  What You’ll Do

  The Kennel Attendant provides attentive hands-on care for all cats and kittens during their stay at the ASPCA Way Station until they are transferred to adoption partners or other foster homes. Primary responsibilities include daily feeding, cleaning, litter box maintenance, laundry, enrichment, and daily health and behavior monitoring. The Kennel Attendant will also be responsible for deep cleaning kennels and shared spaces, as well as inventory and supply restocking weekly.

  • The Kennel Attendant reports directly to the Manager, Animal Placement & Logistics, and has no direct reports.

  Where and When You’ll Work

  • This position is an on-site role and reports to the ASPCA Way Station in Burbank, CA.

  • ASPCA Way Station operations will be moving to a new location in 2026. This position will then report to the ASPCA Way Station in Carson, CA in early summer 2026.

  • This position is a seasonal position from March through November. The schedule is four days a week Tuesday – Friday.

  • Schedules are subject to change as needed by the ASPCA

  Compensation

  Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary range for this role is set forth below and may be modified in the future.

  • The target hiring range for this role is $23.00 - $24.45 / hour

  Responsibilities:

  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  Animal Care and Welfare

  • Provide attentive and compassionate care for all kittens and cats at the Way Station including daily feeding, spot cleaning, and litter box maintenance

  • Provide behavior enrichment and daily health and behavior monitoring for all kittens and cats at the Way Station following ASPCA protocols

  • Set up Way Station kennels for felines

  • Move felines from Way Station kennels to surgery appointments in the morning and move back to Way Station kennels in the afternoon

  • Receive and send out felines utilizing rideshare and ASPCA drivers

  • Other duties as assigned

  Way Station Support

  • Clean and disinfect kennels, equipment, foster supplies and facility spaces while utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment and sanitation protocols

  • Wash, dry and fold all laundry for the Way Station

  • Monitor supply levels, perform inventory checks and restock supplies as needed

  • Work in compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and requirements

  • Engage in regular effective feedback conversations, career conversations, annual performance evaluations and ongoing check-in conversations with your manager

  • Other duties as assigned

  Qualifications

  • Shows drive and passion for getting things done

  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to work independently or as part of a team

  • Adapts willingly to new ways of working, relationships or responsibilities

  • Proficiency in basic animal care, low-stress handling, and disease recognition, including familiarity with veterinary hospital protocols and procedures, is preferred

  • Able to lift up to 30 pounds and perform tasks requiring walking, standing, bending, kneeling, and reaching throughout an 8-hour workday

  • Ability to vigorously, quickly and thoroughly clean animal spaces, including pushing, pulling and using cleaning tools such as a broom and mop

  • Ability to exemplify ASPCA’s core values and behavioral competencies

  Education and Work Experience

  • High School Diploma, GED or Equivalent Experience

  • At least 1 year of personal, volunteer or professional experience handling cats is preferred

  • At least 1 year of experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter is preferred
