      The City of Newport Beach is seeking a highly motivated and detail orientated individual to join the team as a Library Assistant in the Library Services Department . Currently, there is one full-time vacancy in the Mariners Library Branch. This position will provide assistance to the public in the location and selection of library materials and services. The individual will perform routine library work; participate in activities of a specialized library function such as reference, cultural arts, programming and/or literacy services.

      Selection Components:
      • Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review date of Thursday, February 19 , 2026 or at 150 applications - whichever comes first .
      • Online Exam: The most qualified applicants will be invited to take an online exam. This is tentatively scheduled for the week of February 23 ,2026 . Top scoring applicants will be invited to a virtual interview.
      • Virtual Interview: Tentatively scheduled for the week of March 2, 2026 . Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur in the Central Library, Corona del Mar and Mariners branches.

      Career Path:
      This is the entry-to-journey level class in the para-professional library series. The series includes Librarian I, Librarian II, Librarian III, Library Services Manager, and Library Services Director.

      Schedule:
      This position works a flexible schedule of up to 40 hours per week and will include days, nights and weekends based on the needs of the library.

      A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

      Experience: No experience is required. Library experience preferred.

      Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

      License/Certificate : Due to the performance of some field duties, which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record may be required.
