      This is semi-skilled, skilled, or master-level work in the installation, repair, and/or maintenance of mechanical systems, machinery, equipment, and buildings and grounds at various city facilities. Employees in this classification may perform general maintenance work or specialized work as plumbers, electricians, or heating contractors. The work is characterized by the independent nature of the tasks performed and may involve overseeing the work of lower-level staff.

      THIS RECRUITMENT MAY BE USED TO FILL VACANCIES THAT OCCUR IN THIS CLASSIFICATION IN WATER UTILITY, MONONA TERRACE, PARKS, ENGINEERING, TRAFFIC ENGINEERING, OR CDA HOUSING THAT MAY ARISE OVER THE NEXT SIX (6) MONTHS.

      Maintenance of pumping equipment
      • Deep well pump repair/maintenance.
      • Booster pump repair/maintenance.
      • Valve repair (pneumatic, electric, and manual).
      • Installation of flow meters.
      • Line shaft straightening and checking.
      Maintenance of water treatment equipment
      • Troubleshoot and repair chlorinator systems.
      • Install chlorinators and chemical pump equipment.
      • Install and maintain chlorine analyzers.
      • Install and maintain chemical scales.
      Maintenance of Facilities
      • HVAC maintenance/repair
      • Plumbing repairs/install
      • Roofing repairs
      • Window and door repair/replacement
      • Tuck pointing and caulking of building
      Maintenance of reservoirs
      • Clean reservoirs
      • Roof repairs
      • Sanitize interior of reservoir
      • Hatch cover security
      • Confined space entry procedures
      Miscellaneous projects
      • Borehole/well rehab
      • Install new equipment such as chemical systems, air handling units etc.
      • Rehab of well pumping equipment
      Perform other related work as required.


      • Three (3) years of experience in semi-skilled or skilled commercial building and mechanical repair work.
      • Directly related training in applicable HVAC, electrical, welding, and/or plumbing.
      OR
      • Two (2) years of experience in semi-skilled or skilled building and mechanical, or technician repair work, including at least six (6) months of formal trade work.
      • Technical diploma in an Industrial Maintenance/Mechanic or related program.
      OR
      • One (1) year of experience in semi-skilled or skilled building and mechanical, or technician repair work, including at least six (6) months of formal trade work.
      • Associate's degree in Industrial Maintenance/Mechanics or related field.

      OR

      • Two (2) years of experience in applying the following:

        • Methods and practices of building maintenance and repair, including tools, equipment, supplies and materials.

        • Construction and operation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, steam and electrical systems.

        • Occupational hazards and safety precautions. AND

      • Familiarity with the following:

        • The use of standard tools used in building maintenance and mechanical repair work.

        • Computer systems and software applicable to the position.

      Possession of a valid Driver's License.

      Physical Requirements:

      • Ability to lift 25 lbs. repeatedly, 50-75 lbs. frequently and heavier objects occasionally.
      • Ability to engage in strenuous activity consistent with the trade involved (including bending, twisting, stooping, climbing ladder etc.)
      • Ability to work at height, upwards of 100 feet, on the utilities’ facilities, spheres and reservoirs.
      • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
