Overview The Sr. Director, Development Business Operations plays a strategic and facilitative role focused on supporting the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and the Development leadership team to deliver on their near- and long-term strategic objectives. Reporting to the CMO, the Sr. Director, Development Business Operations will have broad responsibility for strategic planning within Development, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives, and will coordinate and drive complex capability projects in partnership with senior functional leaders. S/he will manage progress against objectives and facilitate critical leadership and governance forums, including weekly staff meetings. S/he will represent the CMO in areas of day-to-day operations in partnership with functional leaders, HR and finance, and support departmental communications by planning Town Halls and other similar engagements. This individual will serve as a key member of the Development leadership team and support all areas of the organization which include: Clinical Research, Clinical Operations, Data Sciences & Statistics, Clinical Pharmacology & Pharmacometrics, Regulatory Affairs, Global Patient Safety & Risk Management and Medical Affairs. The Sr. Director, Development Business Operations will actively contribute to Development’s strategic vision, decision-making and execution as well as embody the values envisaged of company senior leaders. As the CMO’s trusted counsel, this role requires a highly resourceful person with strong emotional intelligence, self-motivation, proven collaboration abilities, and deep business acumen who thrives in a fast-paced, high intensity environment. Key Responsibilities - Act as senior level advisor and strategic sounding board to the CMO across operational, collaborative and business initiatives, activities, and deliverables – connecting the day-to-day management of the Development organization with the long-term strategic roadmap. - Lead the creation and implementation of the Development internal communications plan by supporting high-impact executive communications, including presentations for ELT and Board of Directors meetings, as well as all Company/Town Hall meetings. Support CMO in preparing, drafting, and reviewing reports, briefings, and presentations in advance of key internal and external meetings. - Develop and manage a process for measuring and reporting progress on high-priority initiatives and programs across the organization – this includes participating in key enterprise-wide efforts and leading high-profile Development initiatives . - Lead and oversee annual planning and ongoing goal and resource tracking within Development: - Drive formation and tracking of corporate and functional goals pertinent to Development. - In collaboration with Finance and Development expertise areas, coordinate investment planning process, long-range planning and oversight of actual spend; facilitate trade-off decisions. - Oversee workforce planning within Development and track to ensure focus on priority roles with appropriate trade-offs as necessary. - Develop roadmap of development capabilities in collaboration with colleagues within department and business partners. Responsible for driving progress, reporting, identifying and mitigating risks, and escalating issues related to the overall roadmap and individual projects. - Responsible for identifying, recommending, and executing a roadmap of process improvement and improved efficiency initiatives within Development. Liaise cross-functionally (Legal, Finance, Procurement, HR, and other functions as necessary) to support efficient and timely execution of Development objectives. Independently identify and resolve issues limiting execution with focus on simplification. - Manage the seamless execution of development governance model: - Oversee preparation for meetings (agendas, materials, action items). - Collaborate with meeting owners of other key governance bodies to ensure potential duplication of effort/discussion is avoided and ensure the right discussions occur at the appropriate forums. - Track interactions, identify trends and form proposals to optimize process and use of resources. - Be an active and engaged member of the Development Leadership Team. Responsible for facilitation of and participation in Development Leadership Team meetings: drive agenda setting and provide context to agenda topics, send out pre-meeting documentation, capture and share minutes to ensure that important decisions and action items are fully addressed, and assist presenters with preparation for the meetings. Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree in scientific discipline or business with 12+ years of experience in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry, preferably in research & development. - Excellent problem solving and execution skills with ability to multi-task. - Strong project management skills and effective matrix leader. Able to hold teams accountable to deliverables. - Ability to build strong working relationships cross-functionally and across levels.
