      Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will support the current delivery of Gastroenterology outpatient, inpatient and endoscopy services at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. Gastroenterology outpatient skills are essential and most sub-speciality interests can be accommodated. Endoscopy skills would be desirable, but training can be offered to suitable candidates.

General medical and in-patient gastroenterology skills are required, and the applicant will be expected to contribute to the on call medical rota.

The aim of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust Gastroenterology department is to become a leader in the field of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as team work, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.

Although all doctors within the department work to the framework of a job plan, there is a longstanding culture that applies the spirit of the contract where colleagues' cross-cover sessions in most areas to support leave or sickness and to help maintain the smooth working and efficiency of the department. Some of the sessions on the job plan will be fixed, while a proportion will be flexible and used to backfill vacant sessions. Please see attached job description or an indicative job plan.

  • About the company

National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly-funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery—a health service based on clinical need, not ability to pay. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom apart from dental treatment and optical care.
