Urban Planner II (GO Alex Transportation Planner)
An Overview
The GO Alex Transportation Planner performs highly visible work in support of the City’s transportation planning programs and goals. The position supports GO Alex, the City’s Transportation Demand Management (TDM) program that promotes transportation mode choices and assists with managing Transportation Management Plans (TMP) for new development that are approved through the planning and development review process. This role involves program implementation, contractor oversight, and public engagement within a four-person team and under the administrative direction of the GO Alex Program Manager and Division Chief of Mobility Services.

Be a self-motivated transportation planning professional with skills to advance the City’s Transportation Demand Management (TDM) program. Candidates should demonstrate a strong desire to learn and implement transportation planning principles, TDM policies, and grant-funded contractor management. The candidate should excel in project management; and demonstrate the ability to collaborate with stakeholders and communicate technical information effectively, both orally and in writing.The Opportunity – Examples of work
* Executes and manages GO Alex’s engagement programs—connecting with residents, employers, and visitors through innovative initiatives and strategic partnerships, while overseeing contractors to ensure impactful and seamless delivery
* Designs and deliver high-visibility campaigns and signature events such as Bike to Work Day, Operation Illumination, transportation fairs, and interactive demonstrations — bringing transportation programs to life across Alexandria.
* Champions the City’s Employee Transportation Benefits program, helping employees navigate commuting options and maximize available benefits.
* Supports the operation of federal and state grant programs that fund innovative TDM initiatives.
* Partners with the Transportation Communications Officer to craft engaging content and storytelling that amplifies GO Alex’s impact and expands program awareness.
* Helps shape and optimize GO Alex’s customer engagement tools, including CRM systems and data tracking, to strengthen outreach and measure real-world impact.
* Contributes to the development and execution of GO Alex’s annual Work Plan and Transportation Management Plan (TMP), translating strategy into action.
* Prepares compelling program reports that highlight outcomes, performance metrics, and community benefits.
* Assists in analyzing city-wide transportation survey data to inform future program improvements and policy decisions.
* Collaborates with regional partners to share best practices, elevate innovative mobility programs, and represent Alexandria in shaping the future of transportation demand management.

The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) strives to improve the overall quality of life within the City of Alexandria through the development of superior transportation choices. The Mobility Services Division helps manage and promote the City’s many transportation options through policies and programs related to parking, bikeshare, scooters, paratransit, and other modes. The Ideal Candidate
Four-Year College Degree from an accredited college or university in regional, or urban Planning, or a closely related field such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Urban Studies, Public Administration, Physical Sciences, Historic Preservation, or Environmental Studies; three years of experience or Master's degree with 1 year experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.To be considered as an ideal candidate, one should possess a bachelor’s degree in a field listed above and four years of experience; or a master’s degree and two year experience; experience with transportation planning, street design, and transportation policy; proficiency in Smartsheets, Excel, and data integration; familiarity with GIS and CRM systems; bilingual with English/Spanish, Amharic, or Arabic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
