Job No: #1807 Posting Timeline: June 14 – June 24, 2023 Position: Barn and Herd Coordinator Location: Lansing School District’s Equine Center for Learning (Lansing, MI) Starting Date: ASAP Work Weeks: 48 Weeks Work Days per Week: 5 days Hours per Day: 8 hours Salary: Per appropriate placement on the Meet & Confer salary schedule ($30,763) Bargaining Unit: Meet and Confer Join the Lansing School District and share in our mission to provide educational excellence in a safe and nurturing environment for all students through our districtwide open choice model of 21st century best practices. Qualifications: High school diploma required, college degree preferred; 3 to 5 years of previous horse experience required; Previous experience with equine-based learning required; Previous experience with students with IEPs required; Previous experience with arena management; Previous experience with Equine Center for Learning programming and arena scheduling preferred; Demonstrated ability to work in multiethnic and multicultural learning environment; Proven ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; Proven ability to prioritize tasks based on performance goals; Valid driver’s license and good driving record required; and Willingness to perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Organize and coordinate arena herd care volunteer schedules and training sessions and work in conjunction with Program Manager to train all herd care volunteers; Maintain records of herd care volunteer information; Maintain an environment conducive to volunteer safety; Attempt to fill all volunteer slots for the upcoming week. This will typically require individually reaching out to volunteers beyond the weekly newsletter; Ensure throughout facility appropriate and well-maintained signage for volunteers and the public; Coordinate and implement annual volunteer events and dinner with Program Manager; Create herd care volunteer continuing education materials; Maintain easy to understand communication with volunteers via email and Facebook group; Work in conjunction with Program Manager to maintain health of lesson horses including the selection of appropriate horses; Ensure conditioning and preparedness of horses for riding; Maintain up to date herd care records; Formulate and oversee feed schedule in conjunction with Program Manager and team herd meetings Provide data and reports for team herd meetings Provide schedules for routine veterinary care, deworming, dental check and sheath cleanings for each horse with advanced notice to schedule with Program Manager Be present at veterinary care, farrier, chiropractor appointments and provide summary to entire ECL team Ensure that horse’s have adequate blankets and fly protection applies and removed as necessary Manage all aspects of maintenance and upkeep for the horse areas including stalls, hay barn, red barn and horse lots. Direct foal volunteers as necessary to help complete tasks to maintain upkeep Ensure the barn has adequate quality supplies (grain, supplements, hay, first aid supplies, etc.) to provide expected quality of services Plan in conjunction with Program Manager special education field trips to ECL including daily schedule and curriculum Help create and write new curriculum with ability to recognize adjustments that need to be made within the curriculum based on student performance Be familiar with First Aid/emergency procedures for horses and people. Monitor horse health and alert Program Manager if any horse is lame, sick or injured. Work in conjunction with Program Manager to create a treatment plan and then communicate clearly with ECL team next steps Recruit veterinary programs, veterinary clubs, and veterinary technician programs to assist with ECL routine veterinary care Inform universities and community colleges in lower Michigan about our program with Program Manager Work alongside Program Manager to organize, promote, and engage horse sponsorships Supervise daily Beekman, Community and Special event lessons Create individual lesson plans according to rider’s ability Assure all LSD and ECL safety procedures are followed Manage facilitators and volunteers during their scheduled times with Arena Coordinator Attend training sessions and staff meetings Assist with facility maintenance when necessary Manage emergencies during lessons following LSD and ECL procedures Review and maintain accurate rider records; Maintain privacy logs of students; Participate in on-call weekend and other on-call emergencies when necessary Maintain a supportive, friendly and encouraging environment to staff, students, volunteers, parents/guardians Act as mentor to Instructor III, interns and volunteers in the arena Plan, prepare and teach lesson plans and instructional material Manage and ensure a clean facility by completing chores and managing volunteers to assist Deliver instruction in equine education and specialized program areas in conjunction with the Program Manager and other team members; Other duties as assigned. Physical Demands: Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear; Standing and walking for long periods of time; Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; Regularly required to use close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.
