Plan, organize, and implement regional wildlife-saving opportunities for staff, volunteers, members, and guests. Manage a calendar of events.

Assist in assessing current wildlife-saving training opportunities and develop new experiences for staff to enhance both individual and team connection to the Zoo’s mission and vision in partnership with Learning and Development Manager.

Build and support community partnerships. Expand the Zoo’s network of regional partnerships focused on saving animals in the wild through habitat restoration.

Track, manage, and analyze program data to assess progress toward targeted outputs.

Write and share internal reports regularly.

Document events and activities with photographs.

Provide program support for established Zoo programs by facilitating regular opportunities for restoring wildlife habitat.

Liaise with Zoo departments to increase wildlife-saving accessibility and engagement.

Champion and celebrate staff connections with the Zoo’s mission to inspire a wildlife-saving community and engage diverse audiences in actions to save wildlife.

Disseminate local and regional wildlife conservation news, program results, and successes with internal and external audiences.

Collaborate with staff to achieve greater alignment between collection plan and conservation initiatives. Reinforce “See them. Save them.” messaging.

Assist with relationship-building in support of Houston Zoo’s conservation leadership role within AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums).

Assist with administrative duties including regular internal reporting, writing program summaries, and preparation for committee meetings.

BA/BS degree in related field or equivalent experience directly related to researching, developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating closely related programs.

Two (2) years or more experience working in zoo conservation, conservation psychology, or closely related field.

Strong passion for people, conservation, and wildlife

Proficient with duties related to the basic understanding of community engagement, conservation capacity building and strategic development for conservation programming.

Experienced with remaining current with trends and best practices of conservation, research, and behavioral sciences.

Established organization and time management skills to prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines, make decisions, and change course of action quickly if necessary

The Community Conservation Coordinator supports Houston Zoo’s culture of conservation by facilitating community engagement in local and regional wildlife-saving initiatives. This position plays a pivotal role in the Zoo’s journey of becoming one of the world’s leading zoo-based conservation organizations and a leader in the global movement to save wildlife.
As a member of the Houston Zoo’s Wildlife Conservation Department, the Community Conservation Coordinator assists with the design, implementation, and assessment of hands-on conservation action opportunities. The role serves the Zoo's mission of “connecting communities with animals to inspire action to save wildlife” by facilitating engagement in a calendar of events primarily focused on the restoration of regional wildlife habitat including reforestation, prairie and riparian restoration, coastal clean-ups, and more.
