      DEFINITION
      Represent and advocate for defendants entitled to counsel in Brighton Municipal Court. This position must work well in group setting/peers and with the public, while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills, which support the City of Brighton's mission and values.

      AVAILABLILITY
      Attorney must be available for court sessions held on Tuesday at 10:00 am and 3:00 pm via video advisal. Travel to the Adams County Jail will be required. There may be occasional trials or other hearings set outside of the typical Tuesday docket.

      SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
      This position receives direction from the Court Administrator. The Court-Appointed Defense Attorney does not supervise others.

      EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
      Represents and advocates for defendants and renders effective assistance of counsel.

      Ensures the preservation, protection and promotion of the defendant's rights and interests.

      Adheres to the Rules of Professional Conduct and other guidelines of professional conduct stated in statutes, rules, court decisions, codes or canons.

      Acts with reasonable diligence and promptness in representing clients.

      Is available to meet with all Court personnel as necessary.

      QUALIFICATIONS
      Licensed by the State of Colorado Bar and admitted to practice law in the State of Colorado.

      Citizen of the United States and full time resident of the State of Colorado.

      Maintenance of current Professional Malpractice Insurance.

      Knowledge of:
      Criminal law and legal principles, practices and procedures.

      Local ordinances, state laws, and constitutional law, specifically City of Brighton Municipal Code, Colorado Municipal Court Rules, Colorado Uniform Traffic Code, and municipal criminal law.

      Ability to:
      Analyze and appraise case facts, Rules of Evidence and jurisdiction.

      Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

      EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
      Attorney at law with at least three (3) years in active practice at time of appointment. Experience in a municipal court preferred.

      PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
      Physical ability to perform essential job functions: while performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see and demonstrate manual dexterity. The employee is occasionally required to kneel, stoop, and perform light lifting, up to 20 lbs.

      SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
      Possession of valid driver's license with safe driving record.

      Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
