Position Objective
The Mary Ann Swetland Center for Environmental Health is a research center based in the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. Its mission is to accelerate pathways to vibrant and healthy environments through collaborative research, immersive training, and authentic community engagement. The Swetland Center has a three-pronged approach focused on research, training and education, and community engagement. Our goal is to build capacity for the next generation of scientists to work alongside community partners to promote healthy environments for people to thrive. We envision a world where environments are designed to promote holistic health for everyone. The Graduate Research Assistant must uphold the values of the Center including:

The Graduate Research Assistant will support two projects within the Swetland Center:
1. The Nourishing Neighborhoods Empowering Communities Study (Nourishing Power) was a community-action research project that tested ways to transform the food system by bridging organizational power with community power to spark and expand food justice initiatives led by the community.
2. The EH Connector is an agile resource to spark and strengthen partnerships that drive environmental health research, training, and community engagement in Greater Cleveland and beyond. The EH Connector is implemented through Meetups - faculty, students and community leaders to promote collaboration; Quarterly Events - to connect faculty, trainees, community partners and funders to share ideas; Annual Speaker(s) - to raise awareness about environmental health innovations and build skills; and Small Investments - invest in research teams to promote interdisciplinary collaboration
The Graduate Assistant will work closely with the Swetland Center's Director of Operations to support the Environmental Health Connector. The candidate is expected to communicate regularly with study team members to ensure timely execution of tasks.
Responsibilities
The candidate must complete required trainings for the ethical conduct of human subjects research. Working independently and collaboratively, the graduate assistant will be responsible for the following tasks:
• Perform literature reviews related to manuscripts resulting from the Nourishing Power Study
• Develop dissemination materials for various audiences (e.g., academic, community)
• Support administrative, tasks including document management, accuracy review, and record keeping
• Assist with organization of study documents in Box and tracking systems
• Attend Evaluation Core team meetings and writing sessions as available
• Support planning and logistics of EH connector event in April 2026
• Support grant reporting and data reporting requirements
• Other tasks as needed.
Hours and Payment
The Graduate Research Assistant will work up to 20 hours/week between April and August 2026 and will include both in-person work in Cleveland as well as the opportunity to perform some duties remotely. Remote hours may not be completed outside of the state of Ohio. Hourly wages are $15-$22 depending on experience.
Qualifications
Required Skills
Candidate must currently be enrolled as a graduate student at CWRU. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in community engaged environmental health research. Applicants will be considered based on the following skills:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills (required)
• Demonstrated capacity for data analysis and interpretation (qualitative, quantitative, and/or social network)
• Be motivated, self-directed, and independent
• Excellent time management skills including ability to dedicate time to multiple, ongoing tasks and to-do items
• Ability to work collaboratively on teams that include faculty, staff, and members of the community
• Excellent data organization skills, including the ability to export, organize, and summarize data in a uniform, automated, and error-free manner
• Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Consistent attendance and punctuality
