Job Description

- Adhere to company work hours, policies, procedures and rules governing professional staff behavior, California wage and hour laws, the Fair Labor Standards Act and all other applicable legislation for high school internships in a lab setting.
- Adhere to company policies governing confidentiality and the handling of confidential information.
- Assist in inventory management and lab operations projects such as reorganization of supply rooms, reconciling inventories on the Company’s internal database, etc.
- Observe and train in lab safety concepts.
- Attend the “Lab Fundamentals Curriculum” where the candidate will be instructed on potential opportunities that could present themselves, including but not guaranteed are:
- Basic lab – pipetting, buffer prep, equipment usage
- Molecular biology – plasmid prep, PCR, restriction digest
- Cell biology – sterile technique, cell line maintenance
- Immunology – flow cytometry, ELISPOT
- Assist scientists and research associates with research experiments by performing basic tasks, such as buffer prep, under supervision.
- Prepare for and utilize opportunities of learning such as presentations, lectures and conferences afforded by the company.
- Submit on time and with consistency all work assignments to the internship supervisor.
- Provide internship supervisor with periodic progress reports as needed.
- Must be at least 16 year of age and currently enrolled in high school
- Completion of a high school level biology or chemistry class
- Considering studying S.T.E.M. related field
- Able to relate and apply knowledge acquired in the academic setting to the company setting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Position Summary
This position is a full time or part time paid internship with the research and development department where the candidate will gain hands on experience and training under supervision of scientists and research associates on basic day-to-day Biosafety level 1 (BSL-1) laboratory techniques, i.e. buffer prep, plasmid isolation and PCR. The candidate will be able to interact with all the group directors, scientists and other research staff. This is an opportunity for a young student aspiring to study a S.T.E.M. related field to be exposed to the day-to-day activities of a functioning lab, such as but not limited to: safety considerations, waste management, as well as experimental design, management and data presentation.

Working Environment / Physical Environment
Working environment is within an approximately 2,000 square foot lab space equipped with biosafety cabinets for mammalian cell culture and equipment sufficient to complete the tasks described above. Currently, the entire laboratory space operates physically at a BSL2 level, which is then further divided into two separate areas where BSL2 or BSL1 procedures are conducted. The BSL-2 with BSL-2 procedures area may be used to process potentially infectious materials, such as human blood, at which times the area will be restricted from the candidate. In addition, access to areas containing reproductive or acute toxin will be restricted as needed.
*All hires are based upon completion and passage of a background check.
The pay for this position is $17.00/hour.
