      Media Relations Associate

      R Street Institute

      Washington, D.C.

The R Street Institute—a free-market think tank headquartered in Washington, D.C. with regional offices around the country—seeks an energetic media relations associate to promote and pitch R Street experts and their deep policy research to reporters, producers and other media.

The typical day at R Street will include reading the latest public policy and commentary from R Street, proactively and reactively pitching experts to key reporters, reading and sharing morning and evening newsletters, building press lists and more.

R Street works to bolster American innovation, increase consumer choice and protect individual liberty by supporting a smaller, smarter government. We focus on deep scholarship and pragmatic policy solutions that many groups tend to neglect. Our goal is to publish timely, relevant research and analysis that advances a market-oriented society and limited, effective government. To that end, our motto is: “Free Markets. Real Solutions.”

For this position, we seek a motivated individual who enjoys diving deep into policy research and news around public policy at the state and federal level across more than half a dozen issue areas including criminal justice, energy and environment, finance and trade, governance, harm reduction, insurance, and technology and innovation.

If you like reading short- and long-form public policy writing and finding creative ways to communicate new ideas and insights to an array of different audiences, this may be the opportunity for you.

The media relations associate is part of a growing media relations unit that secures hundreds of earned media interviews each year and places dozens of op-eds and commentary pieces each month. The position reports to the media relations director, housed within the larger communications team that oversees R Street’s digital, creative and media products.

Most important to us is an interest in and passion for public policy. We are looking for an individual who is interested in being part of an organization that researches and engages daily in policy discourse and outreach. A desire to learn and a solutions-oriented mindset are also key to this position. The right person for this role will be eager to learn about the issues R Street works on, interested in following the news of the day, and focused on how we can help educate reporters, producers and editors about our work.

This is not an on-the-record position.

      Other Aspects of Your Role

      • Help build and maintain media lists across R Street’s policy areas
      • Establish and maintain relationships with journalists and producers
      • Proactively write pitches about scholars and their work to relevant journalists
      • Track and maintain databases of earned media and interviews
      • Schedule and follow up on broadcast interview opportunities for R Street
      • Assist in managing responses to media inquiries
      • Periodic lookout shifts to guard against ninja infiltration

      Skills and Qualifications

      • No particular educational background is required;—a proven track record of achieving results is far more meaningful
      • Passion for free markets and limited, effective government
      • A sense of humor and a desire to grow with a multifaceted organization

      Workplace

We offer a flexible working arrangement. While it is preferred that the media relations associate live in the D.C. area, it is not required. This is a full-time position that can either work the majority of the week in our D.C. office or be fully remote. We encourage all interested candidates to apply.

      Compensation, Benefits and Perks

R Street strives to provide a compensation package superior to those at other think tanks and nonprofits. In addition to a competitive salary, we provide the following:

      • Unlimited paid time off policy including all federal holidays, the day after Thanksgiving and two weeks holiday closure in December
      • Alternating Fridays off
      • A health insurance option entirely paid by the employer (even for families)
      • Dental and vision insurance
      • 401(k) contributions with up to a 4 percent match
      • HSA employer contribution match
      • Quarterly wellness reimbursement
      • Mobile equipment/mobile plan reimbursement
      • Internet subsidy
      • Annual educational and professional development reimbursement
      • An option among child care assistance, pet care assistance or student loan repayment assistance reimbursement

R Street is committed to a workplace that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. We believe having a more diverse workforce will strengthen R Street’s ability to innovate, achieve our mission and support long-term systemic change. As people dedicated to limited, effective government and free markets we understand that a free society achieves its greatest triumphs by allowing and facilitating a wide variety of approaches to public policy problems. The concept of “broad coalitions,” one of our core operating principles, stems from that insight. People of all races, religions, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, life experiences and socioeconomic backgrounds perform at the highest levels in every type of work that we do and have shaped the principles to which we subscribe. We believe that searching for talent everywhere is an integral part of living up to our principles.

We currently plan to accept applications for this job until filled. We will contact qualified individuals for telephone interviews and conduct them on a rolling basis. Interviews will be held virtually via Zoom.

You must upload a cover letter and resume in Microsoft Word or PDF format to apply.
