      Principal Investigator – Archaeology

      Location: Midwest (Remote/Hybrid options available)

      Environmental Consulting & Technology, Inc. (ECT) is seeking a Registered Professional Archaeologist to join our Cultural Resources team as a Principal Investigator. This is a mid-level role ideal for a skilled archaeologist with 5–7 years of experience in cultural resource management (CRM), including leading archaeological fieldwork and preparing technical documentation in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.

      As a Principal Investigator at ECT, you’ll manage field teams, oversee reporting efforts, and serve as the technical lead for archaeological investigations primarily in the Midwest. This role offers opportunities for professional development, collaboration with senior staff, and exposure to multidisciplinary environmental projects.

      Primary Responsibilities

      • Conduct archival/background research and prepare work plans for cultural resource investigations.
      • Lead field surveys (Phase I), site evaluations (Phase II), and data recovery (Phase III), as well as archaeological monitoring activities.
      • Prepare technical reports, desktop reviews, and documentation in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, NEPA, and applicable state laws.
      • Supervise field crews and coordinate with staff on artifact collection, processing, and curation procedures.
      • Communicate with clients and regulatory agencies to support project goals and facilitate permitting processes.
      • Collaborate with senior staff to support scoping, scheduling, and budgeting for cultural resource tasks.
      • Maintain detailed and organized field notes, maps, and GPS data.
      • Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing and mentorship of junior staff.

      Education & Experience

      • Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field preferred.
      • Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) certification required.
      • 5–7 years of professional CRM experience, with demonstrated experience as a field or project lead.
      • Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
      • Experience working in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio is preferred
      • Familiarity with Section 106, NEPA, and applicable state cultural resource regulations.
      • Demonstrated experience with ArcGIS and GPS data collection.
      • Analytical experience in artifact identification, documentation, and management.

      Preferred Skills

      • Working knowledge of state and federal agency permitting and coordination.
      • Experience writing archaeological reports and NRHP evaluations.
      • Familiarity with digital data collection AGOL/ Field Maps / Survey 123.
      • An understanding of architectural history or historic resources documentation is beneficial.

      Job Essentials

      • Strong technical writing, research, and verbal communication skills.
      • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across project teams.
      • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel regionally for field assignments.
      • Reliable transportation and availability for occasional overnight fieldwork.
