      Position Description
      Seattle Public Utilities has an opportunity for a Senior Civil Engineering Specialist within the Development Services Office (DSO). This position serves on the DSO's Side Sewer Review and Permitting Team, which determines the requirements of and processes permits for new drainage and sanitary side sewer connections. This position reports to the DSO Side Sewer Supervisor.

      Job Responsibilities

      • Coach and mentor associate and assistant civil engineering specialists.
      • Review applications and issue permits for side sewer repairs and new construction.
      • Review plans for sanitary and drainage side sewers for conformance with appliable codes, standards, and policies.
      • Review applications for SDCI Preliminary Assessment Reports to determine points of discharge for sanitary and drainage; specify drainage and/or sanitary mainline extensions where required.
      • Answer questions sent to the side sewer info email, phone, and Zendesk.
      • Answer questions from SPU Side Sewer inspectors.
      • Coach and mentor associate and assistant civil engineering specialists.

      Qualifications
      Experience: Four years' civil engineering experience.

      Education: An Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technology.

      Or: A combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.
      Licenses or Certificates: Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
      Additional Information
      A combination of the following qualifications would be desired, but are not a requirement:
      • Understanding of construction practices/principles, engineering practices/principles, regulatory requirements, Utility Operations and Maintenance practices, Project Management, or a combination thereof.
      • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
      • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
      • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) or Asset Management software. Some examples: Outlook, Teams, Visio, Planner, SharePoint, OneDrive, Excel, GIS, and Maximo.
      • Reporting Tools: Tableau, Power BI, Excel, or other.

      Workplace Environment/ Physical Demands:
      • This position works in an office location and may occasionally require field visits to other facilities and project sites.
      • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
      • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
      • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
      • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
      • Overnight travel may be required.

      This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be required to come into the office a minimum of three days per week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their manager.

      Civil Engineering Experience: (Please select one)
      • I have a minimum of 4 years of civil engineering experience directly relevant to planning and scheduling critical infrastructure projects which include a strong foundation in field experience.
      • I have 2-3 years of civil engineering experience with some exposure to planning and scheduling or related project management duties.
      • I have less than 2 years of civil engineering experience, but I have a strong foundation in engineering principles and a desire to learn more about project planning.
