      Oversees the installations, maintenance, fabrication, and repair of mechanical equipment employed in the operation of water and wastewater treatment plants, well fields, storm stations, pump stations, small engine shops, motor shops, tanks, and all other divisions of the Utilities Department. Repairs and installs pumps, motors, valves, piping, chemical equipment, conveyers, presses, screens, gear boxes, facility carts and all other facility machinery and equipment and performs preventative maintenance and inspections.

      In accordance with Article 24 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769, for posting purposes this open-competitive job posting shall be considered as a simultaneous internal and external posting (it is open to both internal City employees and external applicants).

      This position will remain open until a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received.
      Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.       • Acts as lead worker in directing the work of crew members, including training, guidance, and counseling.
      • Participates in the installation, service, maintenance, and repair of pumps, motors, chlorinators, and other machinery and equipment.
      • Inspects all mechanical equipment; evaluates performance; makes recommendations to the assigned supervisor as to maintenance and repair requirements.
      • Operates and cares for power tools in maintaining, fabricating, and repairing parts of equipment; operates large mobile equipment such as a boom truck, a forklift, a hoist or a crane, when assigned.
      • Reviews equipment manuals and maintenance records to develop work plans.
      • Performs welding, acetylene burning, brazing, soldering, minor carpentry, and painting, as assigned.
      • Completes and submits reports on work activities.
      • Maintains proper working condition of all tools, equipment, and machinery; orders parts, as needed.
      • Assists in the preparation of standard operating procedures.
      • Procures parts and components as needed.
      • Ensures compliance with safety regulations and standard operating procedures.
      • Reading drawing specifications and manufacturer's data sheets.
      • Troubleshooting problems and making recommendations.
      • Works around medium voltage, rotating equipment and various hazardous chemicals.
      • May be required to perform stand-by duty, being available and responding to off-duty emergency call-ins to effect repairs.
      • Performs related work as required.
      MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
      1. Have successfully graduated from a standard high school or trade school or possess a G.E.D. from a recognized institution.
      2. Three (3) or more years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work.
      3. An associate's or higher-level degree from an accredited college or university in a job-related field, may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience.
      4. A valid State of Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or higher with airbrake endorsement.
      5. If claiming Veterans' Preference, you must attach a copy of the DD214 Member 4 form (or other supporting claim documents) to your on-line application.
      PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
      1. Prior work experience in a water or wastewater treatment plant.
      2. Prior lead worker experience.
      As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

      PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
      The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift, stoop, bend, crawl, kneel and climb ladders up to 30 feet in performing a variety of job-related tasks. Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
