- Identify customer requirements for aluminum sheet products, including alloy and appropriate surface treatments and topographies
- Develop and negotiate customer specifications and develop Novelis products and processes to meet
- Assist customers with alloy selection through the communication of design and manufacturing guidelines
- Participate in customer design reviews
- Assess part formability through virtual or physical testing
- Develop product delivery specifications in conjunction with Novelis mills or blanking/tolling subcontractors
- Manage sheet product qualifications
- Support customer tool tryouts and joining assessments
- Troubleshoot issues with the implementation of Novelis products into the OEM manufacturing stream
- Support Novelis R&D activities based on customer’s needs and growth opportunities in alignment with the Technical Development Manager
- Support projects in partnership with OEM Engineering from concept to conclusion
- Contribute to discussions on all new alloy developments regarding specific customer requirements.
- Work in partnership with OEM Materials Engineering, R&D, Supply Chain and Product Development to qualify processes and products
- Lead internal trials with Novelis R&D Americas - Kennesaw and Manufacturing plants
- Expected to work a hybrid schedule (2-3 days per week in the Novi, MI office)
- Minimum of 5 - 10+ years of automotive sheet metal supply experience in application/development
- Engineering or alloy development experience, preferably in the aluminum semi-fabricated sheet industry
- Understanding of Battery Electric Vehicle structures and fundamentals
- Experience in the manufacturing environment both at the customer and internally
- Bachelor’s degree in materials, metallurgical or mechanical engineering or applied mechanics
- Hands-on knowledge of forming and/or joining processes or analysis
- Experience with automotive material or component evaluation plans
- Project management skills
- Experience in customer service on a working level and with plant management
- Ability and desire to perform formability analysis
- Ability to understand part prints and work with CAD models
- Familiarity with automotive functional requirements such as stiffness, durability, NVH, crash, etc.
- Self-motivated and results-oriented
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Understanding of the APQP process a plus
- Fundamental knowledge of SAP is a plus

The Novelis North America Automotive Development team is seeking a Technical Development Engineer. The ideal candidate will be responsible for working directly with customer engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure project success. They will work directly with our toll processors to ensure product quality before shipment to the customer, as well as, solve customer issues with products related to forming, joining, and assembly. Key external customers are customer manufacturing and materials engineering. Key internal customers are account managers, technical development managers, and technical service.
